The Uptown Collapses
The Uptown theatre at Yonge & Bloor collapsed today, trapping several people and killing at least one. A sad story, but also significant because of how much time I spent at the theatre watching movies with friends over the years.
Before the onslaught of the new multi-screen movie complexes, the Uptown was my favourite places to watch a movie, with the old Eglinton theatre a near second. One of the things I remember most is how if you sat in the front row, you could put your feet up on the stage. There was just something special about the Uptown that made it a great place to watch a movie.
It was also the place I saw my wife Merita for the first time, about eight years ago, when we went to see Con Air with friends.
What a shame that its ending turned out to be so tragic.
